A Tanuki bonsai tree can best be described as combining the living and the dead to create a vision of beauty. American bonsai artist Dan Robinson coined the memorable phrase Phoenix Graft, which is based on a legend about a bird that flew into the sun, died and was reborn. In that same spirit, we decided to combine a magnificent piece of California juniper driftwood (natures art) with two beautiful Japanese Procumbens junipers, to create an object of great beauty. The Procumbens juniper is b. Right green in color and soft of texture; the foliage has a youthful-like appearance, but is soft to the touch much like the San Jose juniper. The layered branching habit of this plant gives the subtle appearance of soft undulations around the canopy and would serve nicely in a small Zen garden. Adding to the synergy of the beautiful deadwood and tree is a big oval bonsai pot (12×9x5). The origins of the pot are unknown. It’s a taisho era (around 100 years give or take a decade) tokoname made pot. Not sure of the exact potter, but it was made in the tokoname region of Japan. It’s in excellent shape and one can see the great aging of the clay. The glaze is very unique and not something I may find again. Stand(s) not included. JUNIPER FOREST in SHALLOW YIXING POT. Height: The height of the tallest tree from the soil line to the top of the apex is 31. Trunk Diameter: The trunk Dia, is approximately 1 inch thick. Nebari (Root spread): The root spread is generous and very visible. Canopy: 32 across all trees. When designing a bonsai one of the things I always try to accomplish is to tell a story with the piece that is being created. A successful bonsai Forest must be more than just a few trees planted in a pot. The trees should always generate some kind of emotion for it to be a successful composition. In short, bonsai should always be like a silent poem and a three dimensional painting which bring and adds peace to our lives. In the case of creating this forest the negative space was as important as to where we decided to place the branches. In order to create this forest everything that was not necessary was removed. For a forest that is 22 inches wide, this small giant shows a lot of seasoned character within the trees that only time can provide. Along with the outstanding composition the trees are also blessed with all the right ingredients to make this forest into a masterpiece. The Foemina Juniper has the perfect foliage and upright growth to be added to a forest planting. Along with their ideal straight trunks that taper to the apex, they also have the perfect amount of branches to make a very natural grove. Combined with the rustic appearance that this composition shows, makes it a winning combination for any collector. This is a Bonsai forest that can be cherished for many years and if you like the pictures then I guarantee that you will love the forest. Complementing the dramatic stature of the majestic 7 tree Forest is a very fine and shallow Yixing bonsai pot (30×13x2). Ilex Shilling (Ilex Vomitoria’nana’). The photo shows the actual tree for sale. This is a very developed tree. It was training in ground for close to two years. The branches are highly ramified and this tree will be able to be shown shortly. I’ve left every option open and there are three or more very solid fronts and will be an excellent addition to any collection. The price reflects many hours of wiring and pruning to create this tree and the raw quality. Measurements: Height: 25″ Width: 18″ Trunk Diameter: 5″ Nebari (root spread): 11″. Ships semi bare root. Keep outside only- full sun is best. Ilex Schillings is a Florida native that produces excellent bonsai material. The small leaves and dwarf habit of this variety produce great character and proportion. Ilex Schillings are also very cold and drought hardy while withstanding serious root and top pruning making them great for bonsai cultivation. The dwarf variety typical is kept as a small hedge but with age can grow to over 10′. At one point in history, Ilex Vomitoria was a very popular tea; not to mention the weeping variety has more caffeine than coffee. Syuzan was a very famous Japanese bonsai pot maker. His pots are highly sought after and often used in Kokufu shows. Outside of Japan, a tree at the 2014 national show that won best tropical was house inside a syuzan pot. This deceased pot makers work is treasured.
