This pot was made by Juudo, the founder of the Yamaaki kiln. He died in 1990 and made great pots and founded a great kiln that is no longer in operation. Trunk Diameter: 1.5 at widest point. Nebari (basal flare) : 4. Pot: Unsigned, unglazed Japanese fancy round. This is an amazing Shimpaku juniper in the very hard to find Bunjin/Literati style. This is my favorite style for evergreen trees, but it’s rare to see a good juniper like this. The tree is completely wired and looking great. There is new growth all over and it looks very happy. It’s sitting in a nice unglazed Japanese pot in Japanese pre-mix soil. As always, feel free to ask any questions you may have. I have a new batch of redwoods and yamadori I’m working on. A literati style tree is something different from other bonsai trees that typically represent a tree style in nature. Literati is more complex, symbolic, and very strong in elegant movement as well as aesthetically pleasing. There is little doubt that it is one of the most fascinating of all styles and also one of the hardest to successfully create. Hanging in the realm between nature and vision, realism and impressionism, dream and reality, literati captures our imagination and in doing so, encompasses all that bonsai is and was meant to be. Notes on the tree. One thing that has always been emphasized and taught to me is that in bonsai what is not there is just as important as what is there (branches). In the case of this tree, anything that was not absolutely crucial to the trees story was removed or jinned. Another aspect of bonsai that is just as important as negative space comes in the form of Wabi Sabi. Abi-sabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in the transience and imperfection of all things. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. In Japan, the concept is so deeply ingrained in Bonsai that its difficult to separate one from the other. Through Bonsai, we can learn to embrace the beauty of our imperfect lives. Overall, the composition of this Prostrata juniper (Juniperus Chinensis Prostrata) shows a tree that has weathered the tough times and has emerged as something more beautiful because of it. When designing a bonsai one of the things I always try to accomplish is to tell a story with the tree that I’m creating. A successful bonsai tree must be more than just a plant in a pot. The tree should always generate some kind of emotion for it to be a successful composition. In short, bonsai should always be like a silent poem and a three-dimensional painting which bring and adds peace to our lives. In the case of creating this tree the negative space was as important as to where we decided to place the branches. In order to create this tree everything that was not necessary was removed. When I first acquired this tree it was with the intent of adding it to my Foemina forest, but the tree looked to good standing on its own. Nevertheless, the Foemina Juniper also has the perfect foliage and upright growth to be added to a forest planting. Along with their perfectly straight trunks that taper to the apex, they also have just the right amount of branches to make a very natural grove. Combined with its rustic appearance and deadwood that the tree shows makes it a winning combination for any collector. Overall, the composition of this Foemina juniper (Juniperus Chinensis Foemina) shows a tree that has weathered the tough times and has emerged as something more beautiful because of it. The elegant straight trunk and its short hanging branches gives one the impression of a tree that has spent its entire life by the edge of a cliff. Complementing the dramatic stature of the majestic tree is an equally impressive round Yixing Bonsai pot (10.5×2.5). On a side note. Old American Larch with nice flaky bark and a thin meandering trunk. Interesting shari at the base of the trunk. The tree is 24 inches tall from the soil line and 12 inches wide. It is established in a plastic training pot that is 4 inches tall and 7 inches wide. The soil is old. The soil still has percolation but the tree could be repotted into fresh soil. Larch are USDA agricultural zone 6 or lower. It will not survive in warmer climates. Please check out my other auctions! Along with our love for Bonsai one thing that Japanese Bonsai Master Kunio Kobayashi and this writer have in common is that of all the bonsai styles, the Bunjin (Literart) style is our favorite. Despite the fact that the tree was recently cleaned and wired the tree shows an inner peace and earned stillness that only time and nature can provide. The orange colored tape that is visible in the apex area is a self-fusing elastic tape that helps protect the branch while bending. Complementing the impressive and elegant trunk as well as the entire composition is a shallow round Yixing ceramic bonsai pot (11×2.5).
