A Tanuki bonsai tree can best be described as combining the living and the dead to create a vision of beauty. American bonsai artist Dan Robinson coined the memorable phrase Phoenix Graft, which is based on a legend about a bird that flew into the sun, died and was reborn. In that same spirit, we decided to combine a magnificent piece of California juniper driftwood (natures art) with one of Kenji Miyatas beautiful Kishu Shimapku junipers, to create an object of great beauty. I dont think that I have ever seen a Kenji Miyata tanuki and probably never will again. Before Kenji and his wonderful wife Toyoko moved from Visilia, California I had one last chance to acquire a tree from the great master and this is the last tree that I have from his collection. It is a Kishu Shimpaku Sokan style juniper that was started by Kenji many years ago. Kenji Miyata trees are beautiful on their own, but we decided to do something that has probably never been done before and add a magnificent piece of old California juniper deadwood to Kenjis composition. The Kishu Shimpaku portion of the tree has an. Amazing emerald green condensed scale foliage. And is soft to the touch. The layered branching habit of this plant gives the subtle appearance of soft undulations around the canopy and would serve nicely in a small Zen garden. Adding to the synergy of the beautiful deadwood and tree is a round Yixing ceramic bonsai pot (9×5) with three lovely feet shaped like clouds. Many of the trees that we sell are still a work in progress, but this old Kishu (Shimpaku) Juniper is an almost completed tree that will be show ready soon. It has never been shown anywhere else until today. The tree represents some of the best material that we have to offer. Nevertheless, many of the masterpiece bonsai trees that we eventually sell were started by the original first generation Japanese bonsai masters that Ive studied under here in the west coast. This tree in particular was started and has been worked on several times over the past years by bonsai masters Kenji Miyata and myself to bring to fruition. Miyata-san first styled the tree about ten years ago, but only the shaping of the sinuous trunk and development of the primary branches were done. After we took possession of the tree we decided to stay as close as possible to what Mr. Miyata envisioned when he did his initial design. One of the most important factors in creating a high quality bonsai is that you must first start with a tree that has great potential. Secondly, the person who does the initial designing the tree must know what they are doing, because Masterpiece bonsai trees do not happen by accident. The proportions on this Kishu juniper are very attractive; in fact, I would say that they are ideal! Overall, the composition of this small Kishu juniper conveys a tree that has aged gracefully. The subtle movement of the trunk and its branches gives one the impression of a tree that has spent all of its life on an open prairie. The tree has a pleasing composition that came to fruition through much thought, planning, but most importantly through time. JUNIPER in TOKONAME POT. Height: The height of the tree from the soil line to the top of the apex is 14.5. Trunk Diameter: The trunk Dia, is approximately 2 inchs. Nebari (Root spread): The root spread is generous, but covered by moss. Imagine and old majestic Sequoia (tree) in the midst of nature. When designing a bonsai one of the things I always try to accomplish is to tell a story with the tree that I’m creating. A successful bonsai tree must be more than just a plant in a pot. The tree should always generate some kind of emotion for it to be a successful composition. In short, bonsai should always be like a silent poem and a three dimensional painting which bring and adds peace to our lives. In the case of creating this tree the negative space was as important as to where we decided to place the branches. In order to create this tree everything that was not necessary was removed. When we first acquired this small, but old Foemina juniper from Kenji Miyata it was with the intent of adding it to a Foemina forest, but because of the short height and the tree looking good standing on its own we decided to make it a single Bonsai tree. Nevertheless, this foemina Juniper also has the perfect foliage and upright growth to be added to a small forest planting if desired. Along with the excellent taper that works its way up to the apex, this tree also has just the right amount of branches to make it appear as a very natural tree. Combined with its rustic appearance that this small old tree shows makes it a winning combination for any collector. Complementing the dramatic stature of this majestic little tree is an equally impressive and old Tokoname Bonsai pot (11×8.5×4). On a side note. Ive noticed that not too many sellers talk or write about things that should be done after you receive your tree so I will give you my two cents worth. When you receive your tree unpack it carefully. Cut the tape and plastic wrap from the pot and the branches if applicable.
