Impressive large Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii) Bonsai in an unglazed Japanese Pot. Thunbergii is a native of Japan and is arguably the classic bonsai pine species. The Black Pine is a very vigorous tree commonly grown Japan in parks and ornamental gardens where heights of anything up to 25metres are commonly reached. Black Pines are very tolerant of poor conditions, surviving in nature on barren, stony soils. Thunbergii has thick, dark grey-green needles up to 7-15cm long, though quite long, the needle-size can be reduced in length with the use of bonsai pruning techniques. Bark is purplish-grey and becomes very craggy and fissured with age. It would make a great addition to any Bonsai Collection. SLANT STYLE DESIGN , 33 INCHES TALL, 39 INCHES LONG, AND 41 INCHES WIDE. THE POT IS AN OLDER RECTANGLE PRODUCTION MODEL FROM TOKONAME JAPAN. IT IS CRACKED ON ONE SIDE. ITS IS 26 INCHES LONG, 20 INCHES WIDE , AND 7 INCHES TALL. BECAUSE OF ITS CONDITION THE POT HAS NO VALUE. THE BONSAI IS IN GENERALLY GOOD HEALTH BY APPEARANCE ONLY. IT IS PLANTED AT AN UNUSUAL ANGLE WHICH DOES NOT PRESENT THE TREE VERY WELL. REPOTTING AT A BETTER ANGLE WOULD IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE OF THE TREE. REPOTTING WOULD ALSO ALLOW FOR CLEAN UP AROUND THE BASE. THERE IS A LARGE SCAR ON THE BACK , POSSIBLY AN APEX THAT DIED MANY YEARS AGO , THE IS A VERY OLD TREE AND WAS PART OF THE JAPANESE PAVILION AT THE PAN PACIFIC EXPOSITION (PPE) HELD IN SAN FRANCISCO , CALIFORNIA IN 1915.
